This is Xando Wycliffe.  Xando is a little wild looking, but he’s also pretty much the only friend Jesse has in school.  He’s also pretty rich, and lives in a big house on top of the hill.  It’s a far cry from the empty plot of land behind the abandoned church where Jesse has been staying so far.  On her first visit, Xando tells Jesse that she can come over anytime she wants to.

“Don’t your parents mind?”  she has to ask, because that seems a little weird.  When Derrick was still with her, he always kept tabs on where she was and who she hung out with. 

“Naw. My ‘rents are pretty cool, and besides… ” he shrugged.  “… who’s gonna notice one extra person is a house this size?” 

It made a kind of logic to Jesse, and she came there often to do her homework in peace and to enjoy the luxuries she had never really had before.
